One has to imagine a time when what was really quite an isolated community in the Staffordshire Moorlands was almost overnight converted to a tourist destination owing to the arrival of the railway.

Even today black marks can be seen on many of the villas in Lake Road where conservatories were erected to serve refreshments to the hundreds of city people out for the day.
Several purpose built cafes appeared such as The Limes, Woodside and the Pavilion in order to cater for the ever increasing crowds of visitors.
