Dave Clarke – Transatlantic rower and sailor.
Dave Clarke from Macclesfield came to the Lake in 2007 saying that it was his ambition to row single handed across the Atlantic and that he had ordered a boat for the purpose. Dave had never rowed before although he had previously crossed the Atlantic single handed in a small sailing boat.
“a lesson better learnt on the Lake rather than on his own a thousand miles from shore?”…
His boat duly arrived and Dave spent many days practising in his 5m unsinkable craft which had the latest technology in water desalination and solar panels installed. Local Lake users helped with advice and instruction along with testing the boat under capsize conditions.
The boat performed well but Dave got out with a nasty gash on his head – a lesson better learnt on the Lake rather than on his own a thousand miles from shore?
Dave went on to row across the Atlantic successfully; to the best of our knowledge he is the only person to have both sailed and rowed across the ocean single handed.
