
CANOEING & KAYAKING AT RUDYARD LAKE
Enjoy a peaceful paddle across the waters of Rudyard Lake, surrounded by beautiful Staffordshire countryside. Whether you want to hire a kayak for a relaxed hour on the water or launch your own craft for a full day of exploring, Rudyard offers a simple and scenic paddling experience.
The lake is ideal for kayaks, paddleboards, and small non-motorised craft, giving visitors the chance to explore the water at their own pace while taking in the views along the shoreline.
KAYAK HIRE
Single and double sit-on-top kayaks available.
For experienced paddlers, hiring a kayak is a great way to enjoy the lake without needing your own equipment. Please note you must have prior experience to hire kayaks.
Prices
£20 – first hour
£10 – each additional hour
Availability
Kayaks operate depending on weather and operational conditions.
Booking isn’t required, but please call ahead on the day to confirm we are operating before travelling.
LAUNCH YOUR OWN CRAFT (DAY LAUNCH PERMIT)
If you already own a canoe, kayak or paddleboard you can launch it at Rudyard with a Day Launch Permit.
These permits allow experienced paddlers to spend a full day exploring the lake independently without hiring equipment.

- Hours: 8:30am – 5:00pm Price: £12 per craft
- Car parking at Dam Head is included with your permit.
Permit revenue supports the Rudyard Lake Trust, the charity that conserves, protects and maintains Rudyard Reservoir and its surrounding environment.

Safety Requirements
- Buoyancy aids are mandatory for all paddlers.
- You will be challenged or asked to leave the water if you are seen not correctly wearing a PFD by the Ranger Service.
- Subject to availability and a security deposit, buoyancy aids can be provided at no extra cost. However, it is strongly recommended that paddlers bring their own equipment.
Under 18s
● Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult on the water.
Launching Location
● All craft must launch from Dam Head and check in before paddling.
Parking
- Pay & Display at the Dam head is included within your permit(s).
- Pre-booking permits is not required. However, parking at Dam Head is limited, so arriving earlier in the day is recommended.
INSTRUCTION & CLASSES
Instruction and guided paddle sports sessions are delivered by RIPS CIC, including inclusive and accessible activities for individuals, schools and groups.
